Can't say protection is a must. I'm sure gymnastics coaches would recommend a crash mat, and if you have access to that go ahead and use it. I learned on grass though, with occassional use of a long jump pit. If fear is a big problem for you definately look into finding a mat you could use though.

Ad far a s actual gear goes, I wouldnt recommend it. It would restrict your movement and make the move a lot more difficult than it needs to be.
